History

The Society was founded in 1970 as an academic society for the advancement of science and engineering related to the atomic nucleus and as a meeting point for the Belgians involved with nuclear energy in various organizations.

During its ten first years the society was a local section of the ANS – American Nuclear Society. It was one of the 3 first overseas ANS local sections established. Due to this historical reason, the Belgian Nuclear Society remains presently an ANS Affiliated Society.

In 1980 it became the ‘Belgian Nuclear Society’ and was linked to the European ENS – European Nuclear Society which had been created in Paris in 1975. Today the ENS is a Federation of 24 national societies including several Eastern Europe national societies.
